This is the composition I had gone up y Cribau to shoot, once at sunset and once at sunrise in the morning.

It is realitely straightforward to plan snots like this using a map alone in areas of dramatic landscape. In this case I wanted to shoot Snowdon and this location to the SW of the mountain looked like a good location for a view. Of course I still needed a foreground and pools are marked on the OS map. In that way you can plan a composition you have never seen before, or at least get a pretty good idea!

I didnt quite get the light I was after, but the 10 seconds of light I had (and thats 10 seconds in 3 freezing hours in the morning!) was just enough. The wind was NW and the clouds were forming over the mountains and blocking the sun, which was a shame. At least the light is quite unusual.

Love the slightly asymmetrical effect here. Draws the eyes all over the place. Probably breaks some rules, but those rules are for breaking.

I think you could have opened the composition out a little, the edges of the frozen pool feel lost because of the framing. Otherwise I think this is a strong image, I actually really enjoy the subtle lighting, fleeting moments are what this is all about.
I assume you have used a second exposure for the sky with the mask around the tops of the mountain (Just like to know)? Is that some dodgy masking where the cloud meets the peak on the left - hard to tell at this size.

No, there's just a 11 stop grad effect appied in lightroom.

As for the composition...I have a wider shot which is identical but wider, which I think you might prefer, but I think its more my style and preference to shoot slightly simplified condensed shots.

Isn't fun when you sit with a big map on the desk and you're like.. hmm, and where should I go tomorrow...

. I love that, it's just one of the many things that makes photography interesting. I enjoy walking around in bigger woods and that's even more harsh, map wise, since you nearly can't see shit on 'em, it's just elevation and nothing more hehe.

I think this scene has pretty sweet light, you can almost feel the chilly winds by the blue tones here, really a good capture of the morning element. I see some nice compositions that can be made here with some different weather as well. I hope you'll be back later on!
