Snow Fall by Alex37 Snow Fall by Alex37
This was the first shot I thought of when it started snowing whilst I was up the brook. I actually stood for half an hour here as the snow settled. I fired off a few frames when the snow got a bit lighter, then slipped and ruined the foreground :P. Still, I got the shot I was after. If you are wonderfing why the unusual crop, both the left and right had rather large black shapes which in my opinion ruined the atmosphere.

Here is the shot -snow [link]

Breathtaking. I love that you gave it a longer exposure to make the water look surreal and very soft. It is fitting for the snowscape surrounding the water :D

Thanks, in this case it wasnt actually something I could choose, the light levels were a little too low!

Incredible, and the crop is great. It really works with the scene.

nicely done alex - i feel a little too tight on the crop but that's life with black objects!

Very nice work, crop works very well. Although is making me desperately miss using an xpan, especially with the snow.

This is my kind of crop, a long narrow crop really focuses the viewer where you want them to go. It works wonders in situations like these. The lighting is unique here too, it has a distint winter feel.

yes, its rare that I have managed to pull off a vertical panoramic crop, there arent too many scenes that are well suited to it in my opinion.

Thanks

As an exception, I like the long exposition for the water that flows as it fits with the white snow in this photo.

Usually, long exposition of flowing waters is a pet peeves of mine as I like to see it rough.

Am I the only one who likes rough waterfalls pictures rather than long exposure ones that produces blurred whites?

I tried a shorter exposure, but it meant shooting at ISO800 and f6.7 which I didnt want to. I really try to avoid long exposures of water now, but in this case it couldnt be helped. I dont genreally like frozen in time water thoguh. Thanks

If it´s what you love, obviously, you should try.
But if you want to repair or design airplanes for living you can take photography as a hobby without worrying if you sell or not or if you get commisions or not, its all about passion.
My english instead of geting better is geting worst.... :(

nice nice alex, i prefer this to the other shot of the stream, well composed. I can't make my mind up about the left hand side tho, i'd like to see it with a bit of a wider crop, providing the black shapes you mentioned don't intrude.

Dig it...and the crop works very well here. Only suggestion would be to dodge the water in the river a bit as it seems a bit too dark. Would help pop just a bit more too. Way to be there!
