This standing stone is at Merrivale not far from the stone rows. It is pretty massive, about 8ft.

Nice clean simple shot. The well lit stone against the dark moody sky (which we're seeing all to much of lately) really works.

Nice work, the largest standing stones on the moor are at the Drizzle Combe area, OS grid 591668, just NE of Ditsworthy Warren House.

Thanks very much, I have actually already created a prehistoric OS map of dartmoor with all the sites I want to visit. Grey Weathers, Drizzle Combe and the Beardown Man are top of the list at the moment, hopefully I can find the time and the weather int eh next few weeks to see them.

Now that is just weird.....I was there yesterday and have some pics to put up but you beat me too it.
It is a strange location, I was looking at the map at the positioning and wondered if they lined up with some star formation? any light on the story as youre more local than I?
Great image, moody and typical dartmoor skies!

That is a bit weird.
There is no known correlation with any of the Merrivale sites and the seasons or stars. People speculate that the longest stone row there was used for ceremonial processions but I personally dont think that is very likely. In other words, no!
Thanks

I thought the row nearest the road was possibly to do with the leat that runs down the hill, maybe an early attempt to contain it?
But like you say, total mystery really.

I think the stone rows are thousands of years older than the leat and certainly werent used to contain a water course. It is a mystery!

Great work. I like the dark brooding sky in the background with the calm feeling of the sun on the stone.
