This one was really composed for colour, I just manoeuvred the camera to make the most of the leaves below and block as much of the sky from the shot as possible.

It has a natural look that some of your photos miss (not Nature, but natural-realistic). I understand the problem with background sky. You could have been more agressive in removing it.

For example. Crop off the top 10-20% to leave only the parts of the photo from the bottom horizontal branch downwards. You get a clearly dominent subject (the river), the colour contrast appears deeper, the foreground pops more and the single branch has more impact. In my opinion. But on the other hand, the partial trunk then becomes a little more unnatural looking.

Nice job, it's a great looking photo!

Okay thanks. I am quite happy with this photo though, I have had a play with various crops and I do like it as it is, for better or worse. It is always nice to receive some thoughtful input though.

Could you leave comments on the shots that you think look unrealistic?

oh hell, I didn't mean to imply that all your shots are combinations of layers! I know you seem to consider the effect of edits far more than most photographers.

Ok ok just kidding. I should clarify that - by unrealistic, I don't mean unpleasant. I love blends(layering) and hdr but those shots seem to come from a different planet than the one I live on. This looked more natural. But sure, I'll leave a couple of comments so you see what I mean.

Yeah, I think that shot in particular is just a complete freak. I have probably reprocessed it more than any other. I am now happy with it. My mum was actually with me at the time and she agree that it looks right, which is usually a fairly good measure as she is quite sceptical of my photography! Thanks for clarifying.
