Blue moon by Alex37 Blue moon by Alex37
I was up at 4 am with 4 1/2 hours of perfect sleep on a great nights camp up on Dartmoor in still conditions.

If anyone is wondering about the composition there was a certain difficulty with trying to shoot at 200mm (to get the moon as big as possible) and including a foreground. In the end I was limited where I could stand by the rock stacks on the hillside. Nevertheless I am happy with the image, even if I can see lots of room for improvement. The foreground is lit by early dawn light

nice work mate and great crop. I know how hard it is when shooting telephoto landscapes to include somthing in the sky as well as foreground interest! Especially at the 400mm end!

cheers Justin. I need to get myself a serious telephoto, either a 300 f4 IS or a 400 5.6.

Thanks Justeline, this is something I often try, but rarely suceed at. The next plan is to get a 400mm+ lens so that I can shoot from the other side fo the valley and silouette a tor. Just need the monies!

simply gorgeous image you do alot of images with strong oranges and reds (not that Im complaining!) but this is like a glass of water a nice refreshing change but still with the bold syle of your work. I love the low moon

Yes, in reality I prefer cool images, like you I find this image refreshing and I should really make a greater effort to shoot in cooler conditions. I will always love the pinks that you get from cirrus, but I have never really been a massive fan of the yellows/orages of the setting sun, I find the colour to be a little oppressive.

The colours of a sunset do tend to dominate an image, I am a fan of strong colours in pictures but muted images with some strong features work much better and are alot less over whelming. YOu should shoot more images like this...maybe I would have to purchase a print!

awesome photo, even though u see rooms for improvement it still looks very amazing, i love that moon,
how long was the exposure and F-stop
i find it very difficult to balance the lighting for the moon and the foreground when shooting,
mostly its either i get the moon's texture but not the foreground or getting a bright glowing moon with no texture with a good exposure for the foreground

thats because of the timing not your camera settings If I told you my camera settings it wouldnt help. The trick is to shoot the moon setting as the sun rises. That was you get the suns early light lighting the foreground allowing you to expose the moon correctly.

God took out his "extreme blue" paint for the sky right here, didn't He? It's so beautiful. And the moon... Everything looks so clear and still. Wonderful...

yeah, you really do get very rich blues before dawn on clear days. There wasnt even a whisper of wind and the only sounds wre made by small birds which nest in the moorland grasses.

Mmm... All I have to do is close my eyes, and I'm there, but your description. I love nature so much, sometimes I just want to run up to the mountains and hide away from everyone except the plants and animals. Of course, I'd bring my family with me... I love them too much to leave them... :)

This is a very pleasing image. I really like the way you've carefully exposed for the moon, and let the rocks "fall" into their natural exposure range - Adams would have been proud - it gives the exact impression of a cool (cold?) early morning. The deep blue "blankness" of the sky really sets off the whole scene. Great shot altogether.

I actually recovered the moon detail by about half a stop, but I didnt want to brighten the rest of the image because I thought it was nice as is. Thanks Craig

Agree that the rest of the image is good as it came. Keeping detail in the moon is always a challenge, and you've done that well - it's great to have some latitude up your sleeve: another good reason for shooting RAW, imo.

Yes indeed. I actually have some more naturally balanced shots taken slightly later, but by that point the moon had moved too far to the right and I couldnt recomposed because I was standing on a rock.
